ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Sunil Gavaskar Picks India’s Playing XI for Australia Clash – News18

India will open their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai. The two teams squared off in a three-match ODI series that concluded earlier this week giving them a final chance to tune-up ahead of the showpiece.
India on Thursday evening announced their final 15-man squad for the tournament with one big change. Ravichandran Ashwin has replaced Axar Patel who is injured and thus missed the bus having made the cut in the initial squad.
Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has picked his India playing XI for their world cup opener against Australia.
In any team, the top-three batters are quite important. A good start from the openers helps the others that follow to play freely. The contribution from the opening pair is going to crucial, Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Gavaskar has gone with three seamers and two spinners in Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.
You may pick three fast bowlers Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. If they want to go with two seamers since they already have Hardik Pandya then an extra spinner can be included. You can have Ashwin in the eleven, he said.
Irfan Pathan agreed with the top-seven but added that India must play five proper bowlers since they may have to bowl under the lights meaning the dew factor will become an issue.
I agree with the top-seven. (But) I want the Indian team to go with proper five bowlers, Pathan said. You have Hardik as sixth bowler but you should go with bowlers having wicket-taking abilities. The pitches you will get now, theres a possibility of dew so then you need to have a solid bowling throughout the world cup.
So go with main bowlers be it three fast bowlers that include Siraj, Shami and Bumrah. If you want someone to team up with Kuldeep Yadav then go with a proper bowler in Jadeja if its on a turning track. Go with proper bowlers who only think about wickets. Your top-7 batters can take care of the runs, he added.
Sunil Gavaskars Playing XI: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah.

Asian Games: Unbeaten Indian Men’s Hockey Team prepares for crucial Pakistan challenge in Hangzhou – The News Minute

The Indian Men’s Hockey Team has displayed their top form at the ongoing 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, picking up three wins in three games so far.
While India began the contest with a 16-0 win over Uzbekistan in the Pool A match, the side led by Captain Harmanpreet Singh followed it up with a 16-1 win over Singapore.
On Thursday, India faced their toughest challenge of the campaign against the 2018 Asian Games Gold medalist Japan and came out of the contest with a 4-2 win to keep their winning streak intact.
Now, on Saturday, India will take on their neighbouring rivals Pakistan in a crucial contest and will hope to add another win to their record.
Pakistan Team, like India, is also having a good run, having won all three games they have played so far. Pakistan began their campaign with an 11-0 win over Singapore and then went on to record a 5-2 win over Bangladesh and an 18-2 win over Uzbekistan.
Speaking about the upcoming game, India captain Harmanpreet Singh stated that the team has learned valuable lessons from their matches thus far in the tournament, which will come in handy against Pakistan.
“It has been a good start for us in the tournament so far, but the most important aspect so far is that with each opponent, we have learnt new things about our gameplay and about how we can improve our game. We have remained unbeaten, which gives us confidence going into our game against Pakistan that we are in good shape and rhythm, and now it is just about maintaining the momentum and implementing the lessons that we are learning every day,” he said.
Pakistan have also been unbeaten so far in the tournament, beating Singapore 11-0 in their first match, and then picking up a 5-2 win over Bangladesh in their second game. Pakistan beat Uzbekistan 18-2 in their third Pool A game on Thursday.
Harmanpreet also opened up on the mood in the dressing room ahead of the Pakistan clash and said that the team is eager to continue their winning run in Hangzhou.
“There is always excitement in the dressing room whenever there is a match against Pakistan. The fans are always the loudest and make their voices heard. Pakistan have a solid team that has been doing really well, so we know we also have to be at our best against them to get a win. We are motivated by the results so far and we are eager to maintain our winning streak in the tournament,” he said.
The two teams last met in the Pool match at the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023 in August, where India won the match 4-0. Since 2013, India and Pakistan have faced each other 24 times, in which India have won 16 times, while Pakistan have won 5 times, and three games ended in a draw.
Chief Coach Craig Fulton said: “We have shown some tremendous progress in the first three games and we are happy with our performance. Of course, there are always some improvements that can be made, and it will be critical that we work on those ahead of the match against a strong team like Pakistan, which is also having a good tournament. We know what our goals are and are confident that we will achieve them on Saturday.”

Sunil Gavaskar makes bold comments on Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023 – Cricket Times

Suryakumar Yadav has earned his place in the 15-man squad for India in the upcoming ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to take place from October 5. The selection of the right-handed batsman sparked intense debate among cricket enthusiasts due to his prior ODI performance falling short of expectations.
However, Surya silenced his critics with a remarkable display of skill during the recent three-match bilateral series against Australia. He notched up 50 runs off 49 deliveries in the first ODI and followed it up with a scintillating 72 off just 37 balls in the second ODI.
The knocks were significant for the 33-year-old, as it had been over a year and a half since he achieved a half-century in the ODI format.
Nevertheless, despite these impressive performances, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar holds the opinion that Surya still has room for further development and refinement to establish himself as a consistent performer in the ODI format.
Gavaskar expressed his viewpoint, stating that Surya has yet to impact the ODI format substantially. According to him, Surya tends to adopt a T20 style approach, primarily in the last 15-20 overs of the game, which, in his perspective, falls short of the requirements for ODI cricket.
He believes Surya should spend extended periods on the field and strive to register for centuries to demonstrate his suitability for the ODI format unequivocally.
Suryakumar hasnt done anything big yet in ODI cricket. He only bats in those final 15-20 overs where he utilizes his T20 abilities which undoubtedly is important as well. But Hardik, Ishan and Rahul can all do that same job as well. So Iyer is confirmed for No. 4. Suryakumar will have to wait and if he does get a chance at No. 4 he has to score a big hundred and show that he can also score a ton as well, said Gavaskar, as quoted by NDTV.
