“A significant loss” – Social media reacts as Axar Patel is ruled out of World Cup 2023 due to injury – Sportskeeda

Team India all-rounder Axar Patel lost his place in the Men in Blue’s final 15-member squad owing to a left quadriceps strain.
While he was named in the preliminary squad, he was replaced by veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Thursday, September 28. Axar picked up the injury during India’s Super 4 clash against Bangladesh at the Asia Cup 2023 earlier this month.
Axar was not included in the squad for the first two ODIs of India’s recently concluded home series against India. He was on the roster for the final fixture but was later ruled out as he failed to recover from his injury.
Several fans took to social media to react to Axar not making it to India’s World Cup 2023 squad due to injury.
Here are some of the top reactions:
It is worth mentioning that this isn’t the first time that Axar Patel has missed out on an opportunity to play in the World Cup. He was replaced by Shardul Thakur in India’s T20 World Cup squad in 2021.
Axar Patel featured in only two matches at the Asia Cup 2023. He was added to the playing XI for India’s Super 4’s tie against Sri Lanka.
The left-handed batter scored 26 runs off 36 balls, helping India register a respectable 213-run total. While he remained wicketless, Rohit Sharma and Co. ultimately secured a 41-run win in the match.
He once again proved his prowess as a batter, contributing 42 runs in 34 deliveries in the subsequent game against Bangladesh. Although India lost by six runs, Axar received widespread praise for his clutch knock.
India’s updated squad for World Cup 2023
Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Cricket World Cup: Why India’s pace attack is its strength – BBC

When India first won the cricket World Cup in 1983, their bowlers were mainly all-rounders.
Many were called ‘bits-and-pieces’ cricketers (who could bowl a bit and bat a bit), but with a couple of exceptions – skipper Kapil Dev being the biggest one – most wouldn’t find a place in the team for their bowling alone.
There was Madan Lal, Roger Binny, Sandeep Patil, Mohinder Amarnath and only two specialist medium-pacers, Balwinder Sandhu and Sunil Valson. The lone spinner in the squad was Ravi Shastri, who didn’t play in the final.
India called on six bowlers in that game. Patil wasn’t needed, and nor was opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth who in later years was good enough to claim five wickets in an innings against New Zealand with his off-spin. Amarnath’s gentle (almost kind) pace contributed to his man of the match awards in both the semi-finals and final.
But 40 years ago, the essence of one-day cricket was slightly different. The focus was not so much on taking wickets as on keeping the run-scoring in check. Over the years, the emphasis shifted to dismissing batters (on the sensible theory that a batter who is out cannot score runs), and now the need is for wicket-takers rather than defensive bowlers.
In India’s win at home in the 2011 World Cup, top batters Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina could all bowl. Only the first two were needed in the final where seven bowled, including Virat Kohli.
Image caption, Shami has been a consistent performer on all pitches
Seven of the 12 most successful bowlers in that tournament were medium-pacers, with India’s Zaheer Khan claiming the most wickets (21), the same as Pakistan’s leg-spinner Shahid Afridi.
In that squad, apart from Khan, the seamers were S Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Ashish Nehra and Praveen Kumar while Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla and Ravichandran Ashwin were the spinners. The focus was clearly on pace then, as it is likely to be this year too.
The bits-and-pieces players of 1983 have given way to the specialists of 2023 in an Indian team that doesn’t have anyone in the top half who can turn his arm over. This is a bit unfair on the bottom half, for bowlers are also expected to bat a little.
This seems to go against the logic of the shorter game where, theoretically, everybody is expected to do a bit of everything. But you can only use the players you have.
Is India’s strength spin or pace?
A line-up of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur and Hardik Pandya suggests that it is pace, especially with Bumrah back in the team after recovering from a back injury and bowling close to his best.
Image caption, Siraj’s heroics at the Asia Cup might get him the nod ahead of others
Bumrah will have an important role to play, while Siraj’s heroics at the Asia Cup finals might get him the nod ahead of the others. When the third seamer’s slot is a choice between Shami and Thakur, you know you have a terrific unit.
While there is little idea of the kind of wickets being prepared (in 2011, the tournament was played in March and April), it is safe to assume that at least initially fast bowlers will play the major role.
It will be a while before the wickets begin to aid spin as more matches are played. Then there is the dew to consider, which often works against spin for the team that bowls second. Play starts at 2pm local time, so there might be a small window before the lights come on for medium pacers to swing the ball. So it’s down to balance once again. You need bowling for all occasions.
And India have just that.
Kuldeep Yadav has emerged as the leading ODI spinner on current form. With Ashwin making it to the final squad – replacing injured left-armer Axar Patel – India will have the best spin combination, with Ravindra Jadeja giving India the luxury of playing three spinners.
Image caption, Kuldeep Yadav has emerged as the leading ODI spinner on current form
England have an excellent pace attack (Mark Wood, Chris Woakes, Reece Topley, David Willey and Sam Curran), Australia have Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green.
And despite the injury to Naseem Shah forcing a change, Pakistan still have an impressive line-up in Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim.
It might be tempting to see the World Cup as a battle between pace attacks. In that case, India hold their own comfortably – the most dramatic change in the team since their first World Cup win.

‘Great Feeling’ Hearing Indian National Anthem, After Near Miss at CWG 2022: Women’s Captain Harmanpreet Ka – News18

The Indian womens cricket team led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur made history by clinching the gold medal at the Asian Games in their maiden appearance and the skipper said it was a great feeling to hear the Indian national anthem play. During the Commonwealth Games last year, the team had lost in the final, claiming silver at Birmingham.
That was a great feeling, Harmanpreet told News18 CricketNext when asked about the emotions upon hearing the national anthem being played, adding, We came in second place at the Commonwealth Games last time, so we missed the chance to hear the national anthem. On this occasion, we were in the middle, which made it feel different.

Harmanpreet had the extra motivation for the win as this was her 100th game as captain and looking back at what the team has achieved in the last year or so, she said she is proud of what the team has achieved. I think the last couple of years have been amazing. All of our hard work has paid off, Im very pleased. The players are working hard, and everyone appreciates it. The government and the BCCI have been so active and helpful; its been an amazing experience, said the WPL winning skipper in an exclusive conversation on the sidelines of a felicitation ceremony with Youth Affairs & Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in attendance in Delhi on Thursday.
India had a relatively easy campaign at the Asian Games and was head and shoulders above everyone else in the competition, but Harmanpreet said there is always room for improvement. I think everything feels okay now that we have won, she said, adding, People only think about what went wrong after theyve lost. When you win, you dont care about small mistakes. On the way back, though, before we got on the plane, we got together as a team to talk about what we did well and what we could do better.
Both our coach and captain pointed out things we need to work on as we get ready for future tournaments, especially the World Cup. We are determined to work together to fix these problems and make our mark on the world stage as a team.

VAC vs NSW Match Prediction & Analysis
The Australia Domestic One-Day Cup 2023 is underway and both Victoria and New South Wales are off to a winning start. Both teams delivered a good bowling performance in their last match.
While Victoria bowled out Tasmania for 224 runs, NSW took on the same opposition and cleaned them up for just 198 runs. However, it was New South Wales who were clinical in their victory as they chased down the target with 6 wickets in hand with plenty of overs left.
Victoria, on the other hand, struggled to reach the 225-run target as they lost 7 wickets and won the game in the 45th Over. Scott Boland was the start with the ball for Victoria while Jackson Bird was the top bowler for NSW.
NSW bring in a strong-looking bowling attack with some really promising names and can pose a tough challenge to the Victorian batting lineup.
TEAMS PREVIEW
Victoria Preview
Victoria skipper Peter Handscomb will not be happy with how his side reached the target in their last match against Tasmania. Theyve got a solid top-4 and as such, they shouldnt have required so many overs and lost 7 wickets on their way to victory.
Peter Handscomb at number 4 is a reliable batsman and will be one to watch out for in this contest. At number 3, theyve got Marcus Harris, another promising batsman who will be crucial in striking big partnerships in the middle.
And on top of all this, the opening pair of Thomas Rogers and Sam Harper promise a good, confident, and attacking start at the outset. After losing Harper early in the run-chase, Handscomb and Rogers added 62 runs for the 2nd wicket.
However, Victoria did not have any longer partnerships thereafter and they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Campbell Kellaway, a 20-year old batting all-rounder stepped up and played a fighting knock of 46 runs at number 5 while his team was losing wickets regularly.
He held the innings from one end and ensured the team didnt slip into further collapse. The lower order features a quality bowling all-rounder in Will Sutherland who will be a key finisher to watch out for.
In the bowling department, Scott Boland will lead the attack while Todd Murphy will be the key spinner in this attack. Though young and inexperienced, there are some quality bowlers in this squad who had a great first game.
Victoria Predicted Playing XI:
Thomas Rogers, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Peter Handscomb (c & wk), Campbell Kellaway, Jonathan Merlo, Will Sutherland, Samuel Elliott, Fergus O Neill, Todd Murphy, Scott Boland
Victoria Actual Playing XI:
Campbell Kellaway, Marcus Harris, Peter Handscomb, Sam Harper, Samuel Elliott, Scott Boland, Thomas Fraser Rogers, Todd Murphy, Fergus ONeill, Jonathan Merlo, Will Sutherland
New South Wales Preview
New South Wales feature a strong overall side with a quality bowling attack that is well-supported by a strong batting lineup. The opening duo of Jack Edwards and Daniel Hughes is quite threatening and these two delivered a 137-run opening stand in the last match.
The batting order just gets better as you go further down the order. There is Kurtis Patterson at number 3 followed by skipper Moises Henriques. While the openers can adopt a more attacking approach, these two will be expected to build a strong partnership and stay at the crease longer.
One of the most promising batters to come from the Aussie domestic circuit in recent times, Jason Sangha didnt feature anywhere in the top 6 of this lineup.
That was an interesting move to push Sangha down the order in the last match. While he would have come out to bat at number 7, he would be followed by the big-hitting batting all-rounder Hayden Kerr.
This shows the batting lineup of New South Wales is not only deep but also strong all the way through. There are many reliable and talented batters in this lineup.
Moreover, the bowling attack is even more threatening with the likes of Chris Tremain, Jackson Bird, and Chris Green. All-rounder Jackson Edward proved his mettle with a brilliant score of 92 runs at the top and bowling figures of 2 for 24 from 9 Overs.
New South Wales Predicted Playing XI:
Daniel Hughes, Jack Edwards, Kurtis Patterson, Moises Henriques (c), Oliver Davies, Matthew Gilkes (wk), Jason Sangha, Hayden Kerr, Chris Green, Chris Tremain, Jackson Bird
New South Wales Actual Playing XI:
Daniel Hughes, Jack Edwards, Jason Sangha, Kurtis Patterson, Oliver Davies, Matthew Gilkes, Ben Dwarshuis, Chris Green, Jackson Bird, Hayden Kerr, Moises Henriques
PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONS
Weather Conditions
It is a batting-friendly surface at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. Batters should be able to score runs comfortably while the ball is new. And later on, only after a batter is well set, can he afford to attack and play the drives. It will be a sunny day with a high of 25 degrees Celsius in Melbourne on the match day.
Venue Details
Junction Oval in Melbourne will be the venue for this game. It has hosted two matches in this tournament so far and Victoria will be playing two more games after this one at this venue. We reckon a total of 260+ will be quite competitive on this ground and both teams have the right bowlers to defend such a total.
Toss: To Bowl
In the two one-dayers played at this venue so far this season, the team bowling first has dominated the opposition and secured a comfortable win. Both skippers will be eager to bowl first and put the opposition on the backfoot early on.
VAC vs NSW Winning Prediction
It is a bit tricky to pick a winner between these two well-matched teams. The bowling is quite lethal in both teams and the batters also have great potential. Though Victoria struggled on their way to a victory in the first match, theyve got great potential in the batting.
Considering the bowling strength of both teams, we reckon the batters in both teams will be tested. And New South Wales, with their batting depth and overall balance in the side, will have a slight edge and start as favorites in our match prediction.

“Shakib could have messaged Tamim or spoken for a minute” – Mashrafe Mortaza hits out at BCB over Tamim Iqbal controversy – Sportskeeda

Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has lashed out at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for failing to handle the Tamim Iqbal situation and allowing it to snowball into a massive controversy. Mortaza opined that captain Shakib Al Hasan could have approached Tamim and discussed the matter with him amicably.
In some rather embarrassing developments, Tamim blamed the BCB for his non-selection in the World Cup 2023 squad, claiming that he was asked to bat down the order. Subsequently, Shakib lashed out at the senior Bangladesh opener and termed him selfish for not thinking about the team first.
Taking to his official Facebook page, Mortaza was extremely critical of BCB for the manner in which they handled the entire situation.
As the captain, Shakib could have messaged Tamim or spoken for a minute, saying, ‘I have this plan, I’ll discuss it with you later.’ I think that would have resolved the entire issue here,” he said.
On the controversy over Tamim being reportedly asked to bat down the order in spite of him being an opener, the former Bangladesh captain was quoted as saying by India Today:
According to my cricket knowledge, this instruction of batting in the middle order or skipping the first game should have come from coach, captain or a selector who will go with the team. Not from any BCB official. They could have said it after announcing the squad or two days before the first game. I dont understand the reason behind telling this to Tamim before announcing the squad.”
After Tamim announced retirement, the issue went even to the prime minister. She asked Tamim to play the World Cup and thats why Tamim agreed to it. I dont think any further discussion was needed for this especially from any BCB official. All these conversation with Tamim should have come after announcing the squad, Mortaza added.
Tamim recently made a comeback from a back injury during the series against New Zealand. However, after batting in the second ODI, he admitted that he was still feeling pain in his back.
In a recent interview with T-Sports, Shakib lashed out at Tamim and described his unwillingness to not bat in the middle order as childish.
“Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener, scored 10,000-plus runs. If he sometimes bats at No 3 or 4, would it be a big problem? It is totally childish. It is my bat, I will play. No one else can play. A player should bat at any position for the team. Team first,” Shakib said.
Tamim, 34, has played 243 ODIs, scoring 8357 runs at an average of 36.65, with 14 hundreds and 56 fifties to his name.

Yuvraj recalls Sachin’s advice in key message for Team India ahead of 2023 WC – Hindustan Times

Team India will begin its 2023 World Cup campaign on October 8 when the side faces Australia in Chennai, and will meet England and Netherlands in two warm-up matches ahead of the tournament. Rohit Sharma’s men enjoyed impressive outings in the build-up to the marquee tournament, lifting the Asia Cup earlier this month before defeating the Aussies 2-1 in a three-match ODI series. Despite being in outstanding form, managing the pressure of a home World Cup presents unique challenges, and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has shared insights into how the 2011 World Cup-winning team worked to alleviate pressure during their campaign.

Yuvraj revealed that while the social media at the time (2011) wasn’t as prevalent as it is today, it did not prevent media and public scrutiny from becoming overwhelming for the Indian team, especially after a disappointing loss to South Africa. Sensing the team’s need to regain its focus, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar stepped in, calling for a crucial team meeting.
Now, distraction is a bit more because that time there was no social media. There was distraction with media and people. We were trying to focus on the game, and in the world cup, we had lost to South Africa – a game we should have won. The media started to go berserk. Sachin sat down with the team and said, ‘we need to stop watching television, stop reading the papers. Use our headphones when we are going through crowds in airports. Just focus on the world cup’. The team agreed, we just followed that and it really worked, Yuvraj recalled.
Because there’s anyway so much pressure. Problem with India is that, people think only Indian team will win. It’s a big World Cup, there are so many good teams out there, and we got to be really focussed on your tasks at hand.
Team India lands in Guwahati
The Indian team arrived in Guwahati on Thursday ahead of its warm-up match against England scheduled for September 30. Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was drafted into India’s 15-member World Cup squad earlier in the day to replace the injured Axar Patel, also joined the team in Guwahati.
Axar Patel had been grappling with a left quadriceps strain since the Asia Cup Super Four match against Bangladesh, and his injury prevented him from participating in the Asia Cup final and India’s subsequent three-match ODI series against Australia. Additionally, the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer from their prolonged injuries was a major boost to the squad.

Jonty Rhodes runs out Inzamam
Pakistan were searching for quick runs while chasing a revised target against South Africa. Inzamam-ul-Haq lifted the Pakistan scoring rate with his brisk knock. In the 31st over, a Brian McMillan delivery hit his pads and lofted towards the point region.
Inzamam set off before realising that no run was available. He turned back for the safety of his crease. However, by that time Jonty Rhodes had already snared the ball and raced towards the stumps. He pulled out a flawless dive and stretched out his right arm to crash the stumps before Inzamam could make it.
