The latest edition of the ODI World Cup is less than a week away. The warm-up matches have already begun as teams are doing some fine-tuning ahead of the showpiece event.
Many experts and fans have already predicted their picks to reach the semifinals. Former India allrounder Yusuf Pathan, who won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011, is the latest to throw his hat in the ring, as the 40-year-old predicted India, England, Australia, and Pakistan to reach the semi-final stage of the competition.
“Watching this World Cup closely and backing our #TeamIndia all the way! My top four picks for the semi finals are India, England, Australia, and Pakistan. Some exciting cricket ahead!” Yusuf wrote on his official ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) handle.

India are the top side in ODI cricket in terms of the ICC team rankings. Pakistan and Australia are close behind at No. 2 and 3, respectively. Defending champions England, on the other hand, are placed at No. 5 in the rankings.
Opening matches for India, England, Australia, and Pakistan
England will play in the curtain-raiser against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 5. Pakistan will be in action against qualifiers Netherlands in Hyderabad on October 6. The Men in Blue will begin their campaign on October 8, when they take on Australia in Chennai.
India are hosting the World Cup exclusively for the first time. They are one of the strongest contenders to go the distance. Australia need no introduction in the 50-over World Cup as they have won the title on five occasions, which is the most by any nation. Pakistan and England have won the marquee event on one occasion apiece.

SAFF U-19 Championship: India thrash Pakistan to lift title – Khel Now

After a wait-and-see approach for the first 45 minutes, the Blue Colts decided to crack the whip in the second session and emerged the SAFF Mens U19 champions with a vigorous 3-0 triumph over Pakistan at the Dashrath Stadium in Kathmandu on Saturday, September 30, 2023.
It was Indias eighth youth title in the SAFF championships, a clear testimony of their regional supremacy.
In a stunning display of talent and composure, substitute Manglenthang Kipgen once again emerged as the hero for the Indians. Following his nerve-wracking winning penalty strike against hosts Nepal in the semi-final on Wednesday, Kipgen continued to shine on the grand stage as he scored the first two goals to literally slam the doors on Pakistans ambitions. He probably had no competitor in sight when he was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
Kipgen had a role to play in the third goal, too, as his clever chip resulted in Gwgwmsar Goyary scoring the third goal in the add-on time, thus sealing Pakistans fate in the tie, who were by then reduced to a 10-man team.
The India youngsters impactful presence came to life when he came on as a substitute for Ebindas Yesudasan at the commencement of the second half, with the score still locked at 0-0. However, it didnt prevent him from leaving an indelible mark on the match.
What also made this achievement all the more remarkable is that for the vast majority of the Indian squad, this SAFF U-19 Championship marked their first international tournament representing their nation.
India were up against a well-organised Pakistani defence right from the start of the game. With Pakistan resorting to physical football, the Indians took time to settle down in the match. India had their first real opportunity in the 37th minute. Ebindas Yesudasan delivered a pass from midfield to Naoba Meitei Pangambam, but Pakistan defender Muhammad Azan quickly stepped in to intercept.
Unfortunately for Pakistan, Azans clearance was flawed, leading to the ball finding its way to Sahil Khurshid. However, the young Indian forward struggled to maintain his balance and couldnt generate enough power behind his shot. As a result, the attempt was easily gathered by Pakistans goalkeeper Sahil Gul.
The second half of the match brought about a remarkable shift in dynamics. India took control of the game, dictating the tempo with their passes and making effective use of the available space. Their dominance was evident right from the start, as they crafted an early chance. Unfortunately, Khurshid couldnt capitalise on a cross, missing a golden opportunity to put India ahead.
Nonetheless, their assertive play signalled a promising turn of events and they ultimately took the lead in the 64th minute. The pivotal moment unfolded with Kipgen delivering a breathtaking goal from just beyond the box.
The sequence began with Kipgens attempt to set up a teammate within the box, only to have the pass blocked by Muhammad Azan. However, Kipgen seized the rebound. With precision and finesse, he unleashed a curling shot with his right foot that left the Pakistan defence in awe, propelling India into the lead.
In the 85th minute, Kipgen located a gap in Pakistans defensive wall and delivered a beautifully curled free-kick. What added to the spectacle was the clever move from another India substitute, Kelvin Singh Taorem, who made a run in front of the Pakistan defence. Pakistan goalkeeper Gul anticipated Taorem would take control of the free-kick, but Taorem exhibited a remarkable presence of mind and allowed the ball to pass through. This unexpected decision left Gul perplexed as the ball found its way into the back of the net and extended Indias lead.
India wrapped up the match in style in the fifth minute of added time when Kipgens well-directed cross was headed home by Gwgwmsar Goyary for his third goal in the tournament.
Pakistan were reduced to 10 men towards the end of the match when Ali Zafar was sent off for his second yellow card offence.
India U19: Lionel Daryl Rymmei, Ishaan Shishodia, Ricky Meetei Haobam, Manabir Basumatary (Surajkumar Singh Ngangbam 46th minute), Raja Harijan, Gwgwmsar Goyary, Naoba Meitei Pangambam (Kelvin Singh Taorem 81st minute), Sahil Khurshid, A Siba Prasad, Ebindas Yesudasan (Manglenthang Kipgen 46th minute), Thomas Kanamoottil Cherian.
Most Valuable Player:
Manglenthang Kipgen (IND)
Top Scorers of the Tournament (all 3 goals):
Gwgwmsar Goyary (IND)
Jigme Namgyal (BHU)
Samir Tamang (NEP)
Best Goalkeeper:
Lionel Daryl Rymmei (IND)

It is fair to say that if not for his unfortunate injury during the IPL playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Topley’s stock was on the rise and he was on his way to becoming an elite bowler. The 29-year-old will be one of the major threats when teams play against England. He is quick, strong and can swing the ball. In addition to this, he also can hit hard lengths regularly, which can draw the batsman forward and force them to be in two minds – to play the ball or leave it.
Topley has a stunning record against India as he picked up 12 wickets at an average of just 16.42. Who can forget his six-wicket haul against India last year at Lords defending just 247 runs? He picked up wickets with the new ball and then later came back in the middle overs to break the partnership and finished the tail which shows he is a threat in all phases of play.
However, one positive thing for India is they will take on the defending champions England in Lucknow, which is a pitch known not to swing much but can help bowlers who do possess good slower ones. We only have to wait and see after the refurbishing of the pitch, if it starts to swing and seam a bit then it did earlier. If it does, Topley will be a handful on this surface to deal with for Rohit and Co.
